Crates and his men split up when they entered town. Crates stopped his horse in an alley and was about to ride out when he saw Lori ride by. He saw her turn south toward the red light district. He looked at the bank a block away, turned away from it, spurred his horse and went after Lori.
Lori stopped her horse in front of Chad Learyâs saloon, dismounted and walked in. Crates rode into an alley, withdrew his pistol and went through the door that used to be Jakeâs room, crossed the room and opened the door that led to the bar. The door squeaked, but he was thankful that the squeak was muffled by the confusion inside the bar. Inside the bar he saw Chad Leary barking orders.
âPete!â Chad yelled. âGo tell the Marshal the train is about to be robbed. Lori, you stay here and wait for us and the rest of you men follow me.â
Crates watched Chad Leary and three armed men run out the bar. The bar was deserted, except for Lori. He smiled at his good fortune. The woman he hated. The woman he loved. The woman who destroyed him had her back to him. She was staring out the window, and chances were Griffin and Jake would kill each other. He might not have the gold, but he would eventually. He would kidnap Lori, make her sign over her ranch to a fake name he would give her, then he would send back a partner acting on his behalf and mine the gold.
He opened the door and started walking towards Lori. His boots were soundless on the saw dust floor. When he was behind her, he said, âHello Lori.â
Lori turned around at the sound of Cratesâ voice. Her eyes were big and she gasped. When she regained her composure, she started to scream and Crates clubbed her in the side of the head with his pistol. She fell to the floor and Crates laughed. He was a man out of control, a man possessed with greed, envy and murder. He saw blood trickle from a cut on the side of Loriâs head. The blood ran down her face and fell on the saw dust floor. âYou caused me a lot of trouble. After I get what I want Iâm going to cause you a lot of pain before I kill you.â
Crates turned, filled a burlap bag up with some staples from the kitchen and carried the unconscious woman out the front door. He wasnât concerned about anyone seeing him. He figured everyone would be at the train depot. He tied Lori across the horse, turned and started to untie her horse when he saw a young woman with long, brown hair staring at him from across the street. Crates drew his pistol, cocked it and aimed at the woman in one smooth motion. He hesitated momentarily, and the woman turned and ran down the street. Crates holstered his pistol. He decided to let her live.
